INTRODUCTION
In late 2003 the Board of Management of AFL Tasmania determined
it was an appropriate time to promote the contribution Tasmania has made to the
development of football in Australia.
The Board felt the best way to promote this point was to recognize the great
players Tasmania has produced - it was determined that a Tasmanian Team of the
Century would be the most effective way to promote Tasmania's contribution to
our national game.
AFL Tasmania has selected 25 players in positions, an umpire, coach and an
assistant coach to form the Tasmanian Team of the Century.
When considering all of the great players, coaches and umpires involved in
Tasmanian football since the early 1900's to be one of only 28 people to be
selected in the Tasmanian Team of the Century is a tremendous honour.
AFL Tasmania also believes it is important to recognize the contribution of the
many great players that have played Tasmanian football over the past 100 years.
This has been achieved through a process of nomination.
From over 18,000 players that have played football in Tasmania over the past 100
years AFL Tasmania has identified just 161 players that have been nominated as
players worthy of selection in the Tasmanian Team of the Century. These 161
nominated players are in the top 1% of players Tasmania has produced over the
last century. Sincere congratulations to all nominated players.
While the game in Tasmanian has changed significantly over the past 100 years;
football in Tasmania is still in great shape in comparison to every other state.
Tasmania continues to produce players, coaches and umpires capable of performing
at the highest possible level.
Tasmanian football will always be an important contributor to the Tasmanian
community and to the AFL.
