Algernon Denis "Algy" Tynan was born in Launceston in 1890 and learned his football at Launceston Church Grammar School, joining the Launceston Football Club in 1905.

During his career he represented Tasmania at three carnivals in 1908, 1911 and 1914. After the 1911 carnival he was adjudged the champion fullback of the carnival in Australia.
He captained the NTFA representative side four times during his career.

The team also featured Jack Gardiner - second from left in the third row, HK Littler (VC) - fourth from left in the second row and Bruce Carter (Captain/Coach) fifth from left in the second row.

Algy Tynan captained Launceston in 1910, 1913 and 1914 and was vice captain in 1911 and 1912.

He coached Launceston in 1909 to a premiership, and repeated the success in 1913 but the side went without a flag in 1914. He was joint coach in 1922 and 1923 and was a member of Launceston's 1920 premiership team.

As well as his on field service to the Launceston club, Algy was a member of the club committee from 1909 to 1920 and treasurer in 1910-1911. His services were rewarded in 1921 when he was elected a life member. Algy Tynan was elected as a life member of the NTFA in 1925.
Algy Tynan was a sergeant in World War I, reaching the rank of Lieutenant by the wars end. He was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry and following the war was prominent in the RSL.

He moved south in the late 20's and became involved with the Franklin football club in the Huon Valley for quite a few years. He was Vice President of the club in their 1932 premiership year.
