SEVENTIES FOOTBALL LEGENDS

WAYNE "Baldy" FOX

(Click pictures to enlarge)

Wayne "Baldy" Fox was a big burly forward with superb hands and a straight kicking style. He was a football nomad playing for 5 TFL clubs and also cracking the big time to play one game with Footscray.
Born on 4th January 1959, Wayne Fox came from a footballing family. Older brother Graeme "Brer" was a tough little rover who excelled at in and under football and never took a backward step. Wayne was to make his first senior side while still at Cosgrove High School at the age of 16 when he debuted for Glenorchy in the 1975 season against Clarence.

He played for Glenorchy for 3 years then was picked up by Footscray where he stayed for a one year. He came back to Tasmania due to ill health within the family and played for Glenorchy for another season until the end of 1980.
He transferred to New Norfolk in 1981 and played there for 4 years, mostly at centre half forward.
During this period he was part of the winning combination that the Eagles fielded to win the 1982 TFL premiership under Robbie Dykes.

This team was famous for the fact it contained four sets of brothers; Graham and Michael Hunnibell , Graeme and Wayne Fox, Ian and Gary Williamson, and Neville and Rodney Hill.
In the 1986 season Wayne transferred again to Hobart under Peter Hudson. He left Hobart after a dispute with coach Mark Browning and the committee and went to South Launceston in 1990. However due to a a inability to fulfil their contract with Wayne Fox he was transferred to Sandy Bay mid season.

He played at Sandy Bay for a season and a half and then went to Kermandie in the HFA under coach Wayne "Tiger" Coulson in 1993.
He also played for Kingston in 1994 and 1995 under his brother Graeme.
He then took on his first senior coaching job at Franklin in the old Huon Football Association.
He coached Franklin in 1996 and 1997 resulting in two grand final appearances. The first in 1996 saw a defeat to the Lions by Kermandie by 7 points - 13.14.92 to 12.1.3.85. Franklin, under Fox, clinched the flag in 1997 with a 24 point win over Cygnet. Franklin 15.14.104 to Cygnet 12.8.80.taking .

He was to go on to become one of Tasmania's most prolific goalkickers with a total of 1153 over a 22 year career.
He ranks 13th on the list of all time great senior goalkickers from all leading competitions including VFL, AFL, VFA, SANFL, WAFL and TFL with 1153 goals.
His representative goals record was 19 TFL and 85 for the state.
His goals record speaks for itself - 92 with Glenorchy, 442 with New Norfolk, 392 with Hobart, 82 with Sandy Bay and 41 with South Launceston.
He also achieved leading goalkicker honours at Kermandie with approximately 80 goals, Kingston in 1994 with 102 and Franklin in 1996 with 78.
Strangely enough, he did not kick a single goal while at Footscray. He was mainly played as a full back and centre half back.

He represented both the TFL and Tasmania numerous times.
He first represented Tasmania as the full forward in 1981 and later captained the state side.
Wayne "Baldy" Fox was a true legend of the game in Tasmania.
